How to Commission a Build with HIMALAYA
Commissioning a Custom HIMALAYA build always starts with a conversation.
Step 1: Initial Design Consultation
The first step is an in-depth discussion with our design team, where we narrow in on two foundational elements of the vehicle: body style and drivetrain. These decisions are guided by how you envision using the vehicle—whether that’s a classically restored Land Rover with period-correct character, or a more modern interpretation powered by a brand-new drivetrain.

Step 2: Choosing Your Land Rover Platform
We work across a wide range of vintage Land Rover platforms. Our builds include Series I and Series II Land Rovers from the 1950s and 1960s, Series III Land Rovers from the 1970s, as well as the full range of Defender body styles, including the Defender 90, Defender 110, and Defender 130. Each platform offers its own proportions, driving experience, and personality, and we help guide clients toward the body style that best fits their intended use.

Step 3: Drivetrain & Powertrain Selection
On the drivetrain side, our builds span the full spectrum—from original-style restorations to highly capable modern powertrains. The vast majority of our modern engines come from either GM or Cummins, offering proven reliability, strong performance, and excellent long-term serviceability.

Step 4: Transmission Configuration
Depending on the platform and intended use, we offer both automatic and manual transmission options. This allows us to tailor the driving experience to the client—whether that means a traditional, hands-on feel with a manual gearbox or a modern automatic for daily drivability, long-distance cruising, or off-road ease. Transmission selection is discussed early in the process to ensure it complements both the engine choice and the overall mission of the vehicle.

Step 5: Pricing Framework & Build Slot Reservation
Once we’ve aligned on the body style and drivetrain that best suit your goals, we’re able to establish a general sense of pricing and overall scope. From there, to officially lock in your build slot and move forward, we require a 10% deposit. This deposit allows us to transition into the formal design phase of the project.

Step 6: Design Presentation & Facility Visits
During the design phase, we put together a detailed presentation—either online or in person—walking through the full vision for your vehicle. Clients are always welcome to visit our facility in Charleston, South Carolina, where every HIMALAYA vehicle is built from the ground up. You’re welcome to visit at any point in the process and see your build come to life firsthand.

Step 7: Paint, Materials & Interior Samples
As we refine the design, we’ll mail out paint and leather samples based on the direction established during our conversations. We can match virtually any paint color on the market, and our in-house upholstery team works with a wide range of premium interior materials, leathers, and finishes that we present and review together during the design process.

Our Approach: Collaborative & Transparent Builds
From the first conversation to the final details, our goal is to make commissioning a HIMALAYA build both collaborative and transparent—guiding you through each step while ensuring the final vehicle is a true reflection of how you want to drive and live with it.
